African students will be offered half of this scholarship, and preference will be given to Women. The eligible training or Masters’s programmes are taught in no other language than English.

About the VLIR-UOS Masters Scholarships (ICP)

Students from underdeveloped nations can receive scholarships from VLIR-UOS to attend a Master’s or training program in Flanders, Belgium.

Building capacity, knowledge, and experience for sustainable development is the goal of VLIR-UOS’s funding and facilitation of academic cooperation and exchange between higher education institutions in Flanders (Belgium) and those in developing nations.

The Master’s programs concentrate on particular issues facing developing nations.

These are made to help graduates communicate and put their new expertise to use in their home institutions and nations.

The shorter training programs emphasise skill transmission rather than knowledge transfer, which opens up opportunities for collaboration and networking.

Eligibility for VLIR-UOS Masters Scholarships

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship, you must fulfil the following criteria.

  • Financial support from an IUC- or TEAM project is incompatible with a scholarship offered through the VLIR-UOS scholarship program.
  • Therefore, candidates at universities hosting such projects must provide a statement from the project leader confirming that their department is not affiliated with the project.
  • For a basic Master’s and an advanced Master’s, the maximum age for an ICP candidate is 35 years old.
  • An applicant for the ITP may not be older than 45. At this age, on January 1 of the intake year, the candidate cannot succeed.
  • At the time of application, a candidate must be a citizen and resident of one of the 31 nations on the VLIR-UOS country list for scholarships (albeit not necessarily the same nation).
  • Candidates who work for academic institutions, research institutions, governments, the social economy, or NGOs or who plan to work in one of these fields are given preference by VLIR-UOS.
  • But candidates working for profit (ICP and ITP) and recently graduated candidates (ICP) without any prior work experience may also be eligible for the award.
  • The ITP candidate must have relevant professional experience and a letter of support attesting to their (re)integration in a setting where they can use their newly acquired knowledge and abilities immediately.
  • Regardless of the type of scholarship, a candidate is only permitted to submit one VLIR-UOS scholarship application per year. Therefore, a candidate can only receive one VLIR-UOS scholarship per year.
  • Before January 1 of the admission year, the ICP candidate had never been awarded a scholarship by the Belgian government or enrolled in a Flemish higher education institution to pursue a Master’s degree or an equivalent program.

Selection Criteria

The following factors will be taken into consideration while choosing scholarship candidates:

  • It is improbable that the applicant who cannot persuade motivate his application would be chosen for a scholarship.
  • Candidates who demonstrate a better likelihood of implementing and/or sharing the newly acquired knowledge upon returning to their home country will receive preference.
  • If two candidates of different sexes are equally qualified, the female candidate will be given preference.
  • If there are enough qualified applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa, the selection committee works to ensure that 50% of a program’s scholarships are awarded to individuals from this region.
  • Suppose two candidates are equally qualified. In that case, preference will be given to the candidate who can show they are a member of an ethnic or social minority group. This group is underrepresented in their country or region.
  • This depends on their ability to show they have the potential to be a leader.
  • Candidates who have never been awarded a scholarship to study abroad in a developed nation will be given preference.
