About the University of Westminster
The Westminster tale began in 1838, with the establishment of the Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street in London by Sir George Cayley.
Quintin Hogg, a philanthropist, purchased the Royal Polytechnic Institution building in 1881 and relocated his Young Men’s Christian Institute to 309 Regent Street, which later became the publicly sponsored Regent Street Polytechnic.
Since then, our educational institution has earned a reputation for producing firsts. These include the establishment of the first polytechnic in London and one of the first in the United Kingdom (1838), the establishment of the first public photographic portrait studio, and so on.
