UNIABUJA Department of Linguistics Admission Requirement

This article is designed to help students who wish to study Linguistics Faculty of  Arts and Humanities in University of Abuja (UNIABUJA)  as it is very important for all candidates who wish to apply for any of the courses offered in UNIABUJA  to  carefully confirm and see if the course they Selected is offered in the institution before registering for JAMB.

The University of Abuja is a tertiary institution in the Nigerian capital Abuja. It was established on January 1, 1988 (under Decree No. 110 of 1992 as amended) as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run conventional and distance learning programmes. Academic work began in the University in 1990 with the matriculation of its pioneer students.

The university runs regular degree, diploma, and postgraduate programmes. Due to its location in the Federal Capital Territory has a Centre for Distance Learning School which provides university education to those who cannot acquire such education through the regular university system and those interested in acquiring new knowledge and specialized skills.

O’LEVEL SUBJECT COMBINATION

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Linguistics;

You require;Five (5) SSCE credit passes including English Language.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) AAUA requires ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics one (1) Language, plus any other two (2) Arts/Social Sciences

(ii) BSU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences including Literature in English.

(iii) DELSU requires ‘O’ level credit pass in Literature in English.

(iv) EBSU requires ‘O’ level credit pass in Mathematics and ‘O’ level credit pass in Nigerian Language will be an advantage.

(v) UNI-IBADAN and UNILORIN require ‘O’ level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences. UNILORIN requires at least one Nigerian Language or Literature in English and one other Arts subject. UNILORIN accepts Science subject.

(vi) UNI-IBADAN requires five (5) or six (6) ‘O’ level credit passes at one (1) or two (2) sittings to include English Language, Arts and any other two (2) subjects. Credit passes in African language and Mathematics will be an advantage.

(vii) UNILORIN requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences, at least one (1) Nigerian Language or Literature in English and one (1) other Arts subject.

(viii) KWASU requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Literature in English,any other three (3) Arts/Social Science/Science subjectsplus ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.

(ix) UNIOSUN and UNIUYO require ‘O’ level credit pass in Literature in English.

(x) UNN – as in Linguistics, Igbo and other Nigerian Languages.

JAMB SUBJECT COMBINATION

In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combination needed to study Linguistics under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities in the above Universities include;

Any Language and two (2) other subjects.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) AAUA accepts any Language and two other subjects. Three (3) Arts subjects including Government.

(ii) ABSU accepts one (1) Arts and two (2) other subjects.

(iii) BSU and KWASU require Literature-in English plus any other two (2) subjects

(iv) UNI-IBADAN requires any Language preferably an African Language, Literature in English andone (1) other Arts subject or Social Science subject

(v) UNIOSUN accepts any three (3) Arts subjects.

(vi) UNIZIK and UNILORIN require one (1)Arts subject and any two (2) subjects from Arts/Social Sciences.

(vii) UNIUYO requires Literature in English and any other two (2)Arts or Social Science subjects.

DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENT

These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Linguistics, if you don’t intend to use UTME.

You require;

Two (2) ‘A’ level passes or NCE to include any Language, preferably an African Language.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) AAUA accepts NCE credit/Merit in Yoruba, Mass Communication and Journalism.

(ii) BSU accepts two (2) NCE/ ‘A’ level passes to include English Language, French or any African Language and one (1) other Arts subjects.

(iii) EKSU requires two (2) ‘A’ level passes or NCE credit in Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences to include any language preferably a Nigerian Language.

(iv) UI accepts
a) two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include any Language preferably an African Language and another Arts or Social Science subject.
b) NCE to include any Language preferably an African language and another Arts or Social Science subject at credit or merit level. NOTE A certified knowledge of another language other than English Language will be an added advantage. It is also an advantage if the UTME or Direct Entry subjects include Literature in English.

(v) UNILORIN accepts ND in Linguistics;requires ‘A’ level passes or NCE with a major in Language and any two (2) Arts/Social Sciences/ Sciences subjects.

(vi) UNILORIN and UI require ‘A’ level or NCE merit in the Arts, Social Sciences or Science subjects provided one (1) of the subjects is in the Social Sciences.

(vii) UNIJOS – No Direct Entry.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIABUJA  for the 2019/2020 session, should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 180 or above in your JAMB result.
