The CSIR of India and UNESCO’s World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) are inviting applications for their joint Postgraduate Fellowship Programme 2023.
This programme is targeted at foreign scholars from developing countries interested in pursuing research toward a PhD in the emerging areas of science and technology. The areas should have adequate facilities in CSIR laboratories and institutes in India.
About the Fellowships
The TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowships can be pursued in CSIR institutes and research laboratories in India for a maximum duration of four years. The fellowship types available include:
Sandwich Fellowships
These are designed for those registered for a PhD in their home country. The Fellowship can be granted for a minimum period of six months to a maximum of three years as decided by the host institute.
Full-time Fellowships
These are for those not registered for a PhD in their home country. The Fellowship can be granted for a maximum duration of four years.
Financial Support
CSIR will provide a monthly stipend covering living costs, food, and health insurance. The stipend cannot be converted into foreign currency. Additionally, fellowship awardees are entitled to subsidized accommodation.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowships must meet the following criteria:
- Not to exceed 35 years of age as of the application year’s December 31.
Identify as a citizen of a developing nation (other than India). - Not possess a temporary or long-term residence visa in India or another developed nation.
- Own a Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Be both routinely employed and holding a research assignment in their own country.
- Be enrolled as PhD students in their home country and present the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the HOME university to be eligible for SANDWICH Fellowships.
- If approved by CSIR, be prepared to enrol in an Indian university within the first year if applying for FULL-TIME Fellowships.
- Provide an official acceptance letter from the CSIR host institution.
- If English wasn’t your primary language of instruction, you must demonstrate your English ability.
- Give proof of your intention to return to your country after the Fellowship.
- Do not accept any additional tasks while the Fellowship is in effect.
- Be liable for any accompanying family members’ finances.
Application Process
Those already registered for a PhD in their home country should ensure that the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar of the HOME university signs a copy of the “Registration and No Objection Certificate”, which should then be sent to both CSIR and TWAS.
The acceptance letter from a CSIR institution must be submitted to CSIR and TWAS when applying or by the deadline at the latest. Applications without preliminary acceptance will not be considered for selection.
