Colombia is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries in the world, with its rich cultural heritage reflecting influences by indigenous peoples, European settlement, forced African migration, immigration from Europe and the Middle East. The type of visa you will apply for is dependent on the nature of your academic pursuit in Colombia.

If you would like to go to Colombia for your postgraduate studies, an internship or a student exchange program, you will need to apply for a Visitor (V) visa. This visa has a validity of up to two years.

 Colombia visa requirements

Before you apply for Colombia Student visa in Nigeria, you should have all the essential documents.

1- Filled Visa application form: You will need to download and fill the visa application form. After completing the form, you can submit it or print it out.

2- International passport: Your international passport should be valid and must have 2 blank pages. The travel passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you apply for the Colombia student visa.

3- Letter of acceptance: Before you apply for Colombia Student visa in Nigeria, you need to apply to be admitted into an educational institution in the country. After you are accepted into the educational institution, you will be issued a letter of acceptance.

4- Passport photographs: 2 recently taken passport photographs with white backgrounds are needed. The dimensions of the photographs should be 3cm x 4cm.

5- Bank statement: You should have a recently acquired bank statement. The funds you have available should be enough to cover your tuition, accommodation and living expenses for at least your first year of study in Colombia.

6- Police certificate: This document should show your past criminal record if you have any.

7- Minors: Minors who want to apply for Colombia Student visa in Nigeria will need to provide the documents listed below.

– A birth certificate
– A letter of permission from the minor’s parent or guardians.
– Documents that identify the minor’s parents or guardians

8- Letter from your sponsor: If you have a sponsor who is willing to cover your expenses, you will need a letter from your sponsor. This letter should specify what bills your sponsor is willing to cover, how long they are willing to sponsor you and their contact information.

You will also need:
– a copy of your sponsor’s bank statement. The amount in your sponsor’s bank statement should be at least 10 times the monthly minimum wage in Colombia.
– A copy of the biometric page of your sponsor’s passport

9- Certificates and transcripts that show your past educational qualifications.


10- A copy of a certificate that shows the educational institution that you were accepted into is legally recognized.


11- A statement from the school you are enrolled in showing that you have at least 10 hours of classes every week.

You will need to have all your documents translated and legalized.

Method One:

1- Apply to an educational institution:

This is the first and one of the most important steps when you want to apply for Colombia Student visa in Nigeria. After you gain admission into a university in Colombia, you will be sent a letter of acceptance.

2. Get the visa application form:

When you obtain the letter of acceptance, proceed to the website for the Ministry of foreign affairs and fill the visa application form. After filling the form, submit the application form. You will also need to scan and upload some requested documents.

3. Pay the initial visa fee:

After you submit the application form, You will pay an initial visa application fee of  $16.

4. Receive feedback from the consul:

You will receive a response after submitting your visa application. The response you receive could be ‘approved, required, rejected or inadmissible’.

Approved- This means that you meet all the requirements to be approved for a student visa.

Required- This response is sent when more documents are needed by the consul.

Rejected-  This means that your visa application has been rejected

5. Pay the second visa fee:

If your visa application is approved, you would have to pay the visa fee for the second time. Then go to the embassy with your documents to get your passport stamped.

Method Two:

After you fill the visa application form, you can print it out and continue the visa application process in person.

1- Book a visa appointment:

If you prefer, you can contact the Embassy of Colombia and book a date for your visa appointment.

2- Go for the appointment:

On the day of your appointment, you will submit the required documents and pay the initial visa application fee.

3- Collect your visa:

After your visa application has been processed, you will return to the Embassy of Colombia to collect your Visa and pay the second visa fee if your visa application was approved.
