PTDF Overseas Scholarships

The applications for this program are limited to Universities that are partners with PTDF in the countries mentioned above. This arrangement maintains an environment to safeguard the high standard of the program.

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is a Federal Government parastatal aimed at improving human capacity and petroleum technology to mitigate the needs prevalent in the oil and gas sector.

PDFT has, therefore, called for applications from qualified candidates seeking an M.Sc. or PhD overseas in institutions that are partners with PDFT.

Candidates whose applications pass the merit-based scrutiny will be awarded scholarships to Universities in Germany, France, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom in the 2023/2024 session.

Eligibility for PTDF Overseas Scholarships

For Master of Science Degree

  • Candidates should have a Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant experience within the oil and gas industry.
  • Candidates should have completed the mandatory 1-year National Youth Service (NYSC)
  • They must be computer literate.
  • Candidates should have gotten 5 O’level credits in the School-leaving certificate examination, including in English.

For Doctorate Degree

  • Candidates should have completed the mandatory 1-year National Youth Service (NYSC)
  • They must be computer literate.
  • Candidates should have a Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a very good grade in their second-degree program.
  • Candidates must submit a proposal for research in an area that is relevant and related to the oil and gas sector.
  • The proposal should not be more than five pages long and should include the following:
    • Topic
    • Introduction
    • Methodology Required
    • Mode of Data Collection (Templates for drafting a proposal can be obtained from the scholarship portal).
  • Candidates are required to include their Master’s degree project.

Note: Candidates currently doing a PhD program can only apply if their university is among the partners of PTDF.

Selection Criteria 

PDFT scholarships are very competitive. Therefore, only candidates who show excellence abroad are chosen for the scholarship.

A committee in charge of the selection process uses the following criteria to choose from the candidates who submitted their applications:

  • Candidates should possess academic merit proven by the grade division, full academic transcripts, relevant professional certifications, and quality of publications authored by applicants.
  • Candidates should possess membership in professional bodies operating within the oil and gas sector.
  • The feasibility and viability of the research proposal.
  • Candidates must submit a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) elaborating on their reasons for undertaking the study, the relevance of their proposed research to the oil and gas sector, and the expected impact of such research on national development.

  • Candidates that have benefited from other scholarship programs are advised not to apply.
  • Candidates that successfully pass through the 1st round of screening are requested to submit their transcripts. Therefore, all applicants must prepare their transcripts for submission in anticipation of such requests.

How to Apply for PTDF Overseas Scholarships

Candidates can apply for the specific programmes at the partner universities in any of the four countries. These courses are listed on this website or PTDF – Scholarship Portal.

Candidates are required to scan and upload copies of the following documents:

  • First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result
  • NYSC discharge certificate
  • WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO results
  • Local Government Identification Letter
  • Master’s Degree Certificate (PhD applicants only)
  • Evidence of membership in professional bodies.
