How Many Weekends are in a Year

You wouldn’t be wrong if you said weekends are the best days of the week.

More often than not, everyone looks forward earnestly to the weekend; I mean, it is a respite from the hectic week.

But then, just like everything worthwhile, you have to plan for your weekend if you really want to enjoy every minute of it.

Would it be best if you knew just how many weekends are there in a year to help you plan properly for each of them?

Read on as we take you through how many weekends in a year.

How Many Weekends in a Year

There are over 52 weekends in a year because there are 52 weeks in a year.

However, if a year starts on a weekend, it will end up with 53 weekends.

Also, in the case of a leap year, if a weekend falls on the first two days of the year, there will also be 53 weekends in a year.

So you see, it varies between 52 to 53 weekends in a year. But ideally, it is 52.

Currently, in 2022, there are 53 weekends in the year, with 53 Saturdays and 52 Sundays.

Historical Facts About Weekends

  • In the English language, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday are named after three of the planets considered to be gods – Saturn, Sun, and Moon – while the other days are named after Germanic or Norse gods.
  • A week has 7 days because the Gregorian calendar follows the phases of the moon.

Although the Moon takes 29.5 days to cycle through its phases, this is a hard number to base a time span on.

It was the Babylons that rounded this cycle down to 28 days and divided it into period units of 4, with 7 days each. This is why there are 4 weeks in a month.
  • Although the international standard defines that the week starts on a Monday, in the United States, the norm is still to count Sunday as the first day of the week.

How Many Weeks Are There in a Month

Without the calendar, calculating time would be so difficult.

The most widely used calendar in the world, the Gregorian calendar, shows that there are 365 days in a year (except for leap years which have 366 days).

These days are grouped into 12 months, where each month has either 31 days, 30 days, or 28& days, helping us find the weeks per month.

The days are grouped together as 7-day weeks, so one year has 52 weeks + 1 day.

All the months in the calendar have 4 complete weeks because every month has at least 28 days.

A few months have some extra days, but they are not calculated as a week because these extra days are not enough to add up to 7 days (1 week = 7 days).

Interestingly, it is only the month of February that has exactly 28 days in a normal year. However, in a leap year, it has 29 days. Why does this happen:

  • The earth takes 365 and a quarter days to go around the sun.
  • An ordinary year is taken as 365 days only, leaving the quarter.
  • The four quarters are added together (1/4+1/4+1/4+1/4=1) to make an extra day every four years.
  • This day is added to the leap year. Therefore, there are 366 days in a leap year.

How Many Days Are in a Year Without Weekends?

The number of days in a year without weekends is260 days.

Every four years, this number will be 261 because of leap year, such as in 2020.

How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?

A standard way of figuring out how many work hours are in a year is to take 52 weeks, multiply it by 40 hours per week, and you get a total of 2,080 work hours.

This calculation does not include any holidays and is based on a full-time employee working 40 hours per week.

Interesting Facts About the Calendar

Pope Gregory XIII introduced the calendar in the 1500s, hence the name Gregorian calendar.

It was originally looked at as the work of the Antichrist, and people were not receptive to it.

Trying to figure out why the leap years fall when it comes is confusing.

Leap years fall within an interval of four years, but if those years are again divided by 100, it should also be able to be divided by 400.

For example, 1900, 2100, and 2200 years cannot be leap years. However, 1600, 2000, and 2400 years of leap.

In our time, we start a new day at midnight, but that is not always the case. Astronomers often measured days from noon to noon. Some customs often start a new day at sunrise, and others at sunset.

Conclusion

You should always try to enjoy your weekends because the new week begins almost immediately.
