Gates Millennium Scholarship

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program was established in 1999. It is a 1.6 billion dollar initiative funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The primary goal of the Gates Millennium Scholars program is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial needs to reach their highest potential.

The field of study covered the areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or science. 

Shortlisting Process

The selection of scholars for the Gates Millennium Scholarship involves a multi-stage process. The scholars will be selected after a thorough assessment of the financial needs of all the applicants. The selection process includes:

  • Screening of scholarship applications based on financial need 
  • Telephonic interviews for further shortlisting of candidates

Terms and Conditions

The continuation of the scholarship depends on the good academic performance of the scholars in the examinations conducted by their respective universities.

Renewal cases of stipend holders who are not promoted to the next year will not be considered for further renewal.

Eligibility

  • A US citizen, national, or permanent resident. In good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
  • Applicants must be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial needs. This scholarship is applicable for students from over 42 countries. 
  • To stay eligible for the Millenium Scholarship, students must enroll in an eligible Nevada college or university and work toward an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or pre-baccalaureate certificate. If you’re attending an NSHE community college, be sure to take a minimum of nine credits.

Gates Scholars have come from all 50 states and all American territories and commonwealths.
