FUTA Department of Biotechnology Admission Requirement

This article is designed to help students who wish to study Biotechnology under the Faculty of Sciences e in Federal University of Technology Akure as it is very important for all candidates who wish to apply for any of the courses offered in FUTA to  carefully confirm and see if the course they Selected is offered in the institution before registering for JAMB.

The Federal University of Technology Akure (informally FUT Akure or simply FUTA) was founded in 1981under a drive by the government of Nigeria to create universities that specialised in producing graduates with practical as well as theoretical knowledge of technologies. It is located in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State.

Other universities of technology established around the same time were the Federal University of Technology Owerri, the Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB), which later metamorphosed to the present University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), the Federal University of Technology Minna, the Federal University of Technology Yola, and the Federal University of Technology Bauchi (now Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University).

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Biotechnology;

You require;Five (5) SSCE Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.



(1) MCPHERSON accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in relevant subjects plus ND upper credit, HND upper credit and NCE merit

(2) FUTA requires five (5) SSC credit passes or its equivalent at a maximum of two (2) sittings in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

(3) MOUNTAIN TOP requires five (5) credit passes at SSC or its equivalent to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at not more than two (2) sittings with credit in two (2) other relevant Science subjects; (Physics, Agricultural Science and Geography).

(4) FUTO requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology at not more than two (2) sittings.

(5) MAUTECH requires Five (5) SSC Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physic



In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combination needed to study Biotechnology under the Faculty of Sciences in the above Universities include;

Biology, Chemistry and any other Science subject.



(1) MOUNTAIN TOP requires Chemistry and two (2) of Physics, Biology and Mathematics

(2) NTNU accepts any three (3) Science subjects.

(3) MAUTECH requires Biology, Chemistry and Physics/Mathematics for both Plant Science and Biotechnology



These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Biotechnology, if you don’t intend to use UTME.

You require;Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Biology/Botany/Zoology and Chemistry or Physics.


(1) GOUNI for Biotechnology requires two “A” level passes in Chemistry and any one of Physics, Mathematics or Biology. ND/NCE with good grade in relevant “O” level subjects.

(2) MCPHERSON accepts five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in relevant subjects plus ND upper credit, HND upper credit and NCE merit

(3) MOUNTAIN TOP requires two (2)  ‘A’ level passes to include Chemistry and any one (1) of Physics, Mathematics or Biology

(4) FUTA requires;
a) GCE ‘A’ Level or IJMB or JUBEP or Cambridge examinations passes in Biology/Botany/Zoology and Chemistry/Physics; or
b) ND in any Natural, Agricultural or Life Science courses with a minimum of Upper Credit from a recognised institution

(5) NTNU accepts any two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in the Science subjects. Also accepts ND/HND lower credit or NCE merit in relevant subjects/programmes.

(6) FUTO requires;
a) At least two (2) ‘A’ Level passes not below Grade C in Biology and either Physics or Chemistry.
b) ND/HND at Upper Credit level in life sciences.
c) First Degree in life sciences.
d) Very good passes in three JUPEB subjects namely Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics. It does not accept NCE. Candidates must in addition meet the ‘O’ Level requirements

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into FUTA for the 2019/2020 session, should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have score a minimum of  180 and above in your JAMB result.
