FUTA Department of Applied Geophysics Admission Requirement

This article is designed to help students who wish to study Applied Geophysics under the Faculty of Sciences in Federal University of Technology Akure as it is very important for all candidates who wish to apply for any of the courses offered in FUTA to  carefully confirm and see if the course they Selected is offered in the institution before registering for JAMB.

The Federal University of Technology Akure (informally FUT Akure or simply FUTA) was founded in 1981under a drive by the government of Nigeria to create universities that specialised in producing graduates with practical as well as theoretical knowledge of technologies. It is located in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State.

Other universities of technology established around the same time were the Federal University of Technology Owerri, the Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB), which later metamorphosed to the present University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), the Federal University of Technology Minna, the Federal University of Technology Yola, and the Federal University of Technology Bauchi (now Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University).

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Applied Geophysics;

You require;

Five (5) SSC credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Biology.


(i) OAU requires five `O’ level credit passes in English Language, Chemistry, Biology/Further Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics

(ii) FUTA accepts candidates with five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes including English Language, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry at not more than two (2) sittings or its equivalent


In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combination needed to study Applied Geophysics under the Faculty of Sciences in the above Universities include;

Physics Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.


(i) UNICAL does not accept Biology.

(ii) FUTA and OAU require Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.


These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Applied Geophysics, if you don’t intend to use UTME.

You require;

‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics

(i)  OAU requires ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics

(ii)  OAU accepts HND upper credit in Mining Engineering plus the UTME requirements.

(iii)  UNICAL – Same as for Physics. 

(iv) FUTA may admit candidates to 200 level if they have

(a)  satisfied the general entry requirements for  the University as specified in (a) above;  and

(b)  obtained ND  upper credit or its equivalent in Laboratory Technology Geology Option and in Mining, Civil and Electrical/ Electronic Engineering or any other programme adjudged relevant by the Department; or

(c)  ‘A’ level passes or its equivalent in two (2) of the following subjects: Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into FUTA for the 2019/2020 session, should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have score a minimum of  180 and above in your JAMB result.
