The Agatu Crises.
Agatu is a local government area in Benue State, Nigeria. Agatu is an Idoma speaking natives in the middle belt area.
Over five decades there have been an off and on crisis in the Agatu community. Agatu is usually attacked by the Fulani herdsmen in the area.
Recently over 300 people have been confirmed dead by the on- going attacks in Agatu and of which many of the victims are women and children.
Agatu is facing a serious killings by the Fulani herdsmen. When asked, the herdsmen said the natives of Agatu killed over 10,000 of their cattles.
And it is well known to the people of Agatu that they are herdsmen ( Cattle Rearers) and that’s what they do for a living.
The Governor of Benue State – Samuel Ortom is pleading with the Federal Government of Nigeria to come handle the current situation that is going on in his state. He said “There are issues in my state especially the invasion of herdsmen in one of my local government area- Agatu. While we are making our own efforts to ensure that we maintain peace and order, i thought it was important to also brief the Presidency.
“Right now as i speak to you, several settlements have been razed down and undisclosed number of people are killed and my people are refugees all over the place. I cannot sit back in Benue State when such things is happening”.
He went further to say “But what i have been telling our people is that we need a lasting solutions. We must learn to live with one another. The herdsmen must appreciate that the farmers lives on their farmings and the farmers must appreciate that the herdsmen lives on his Cattle.
The State Government and Federal Government has deployed the mobile forces to the affected areas to ensure peace and security in the community. The affected villages is –
Ugboku, Aila, Akwu, Okokolo, Ochdonya and Adagbo. Some of these villages were burnt down by the herdsmen.
